As the current Chair of the Oregon State Bar Diversity Section, I want to extend a warm welcome. We hope that you will volunteer for and participate in the upcoming Convocation on Equality which will be held in Portland, Oregon at the Oregon Convention Center on November 4, 2011. The Convocation is a day-long conference that will feature two fantastic keynote speakers: Paula Boggs, the Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Starbucks, and Oregon’s very own Hon. Ellen Rosenblum, past chair of the ABA Presidential Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession.
Attendees at the Convocation will have an opportunity to take advantage of three different programming tracks geared toward: 1) attorneys seeking to improve their own practical skills; 2) attorneys seeking to increase their own knowledge about diversity and inclusion or cultural competency; and 3) legal employers who seek to promote diversity and inclusion efforts in their workplace. At the same time, attendees will enjoy participating in the Convocation’s docent program, a networking activity. The Convocation will also have a stunning visual display that recognizes over 300 attorneys who have contributed to the goals of diversity in the Oregon bar, and we’ll have information available on the numerous organizations supporting diversity work in Oregon.
The Convocation on Equality is a hallmark event which will provide opportunities to reflect on our historical efforts to increase diversity in the profession and to receive diversity training and education. It will also serve as a platform to strategically plan for future diversity efforts. I encourage you to take an active part in this important event.
